Pro Tip: Order 5–10% extra bricks. They're difficult to match later if you run short — different kiln batches produce slightly different colors. Keep leftover bricks for future repairs.

How to Calculate Bricks: Complete Guide

Whether you're building a garden wall, patio, or full brick veneer, getting the right brick count saves money and prevents delays. Here's everything you need to know.

Bricks per Square Foot by Size

Brick SizeDimensions (W×H×L)Bricks per Sq Ft (Wall)Bricks per Sq Ft (Flat)
Modular3⅝ × 2¼ × 7⅝"6.754.50
Queen2¾ × 2¾ × 7⅝"5.764.50
King2¾ × 2⅝ × 9⅝"4.503.50
Utility3⅝ × 3⅝ × 11⅝"3.002.25
Standard Paver4 × 2¼ × 8"4.50

Note: These counts include standard 3/8" mortar joints for walls. Dry-laid pavers with sand joints use slightly different counts.

Mortar Estimation

For standard modular bricks with 3/8" mortar joints:

  • 1 bag (80 lb) mortar mix lays approximately 35–40 bricks
  • Per 1,000 bricks: ~25–30 bags of mortar mix
  • Sand needed: About 18–20 cubic feet per 1,000 bricks (with pre-mixed mortar, sand is included)

5 Brick Project Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Not soaking bricks before laying. Dry bricks absorb moisture from mortar, weakening the bond. Dampen them (don't saturate) before use.
  2. Inconsistent mortar joints. Use a jointing tool and story pole to keep joints uniform. Uneven joints look amateur and can cause structural issues.
  3. Mixing mortar too wet or too dry. Mortar should hold its shape when squeezed but not crumble. Too wet = sliding bricks and weak joints.
  4. Skipping the foundation. Brick walls need a proper concrete footing below the frost line. A wall without a footing will crack and lean.
  5. Not planning for drainage. Brick patios need a proper gravel base (4–6") and slight slope (1/4" per foot) for water drainage.

For driveways: Use herringbone pattern — it distributes load better and resists shifting under vehicle weight. Running bond tends to track (shift in the direction of traffic).
