Pro Tip: Add 10โ€“15% extra for waste, cuts, and ridge/hip areas. Complex roof shapes with valleys and dormers can waste 15โ€“20%. The estimates above include a 10% waste factor.

How to Calculate Roofing Materials

Getting an accurate material estimate starts with understanding your roof's actual surface area, which is always larger than the building footprint because of the pitch (slope).

Step 1: Calculate Roof Area

Roof Area = Length ร— Width ร— Pitch Factor ร— Number of Sections

The pitch factor converts flat area to sloped area. A 4/12 pitch multiplies area by 1.054 (5.4% more). A 12/12 pitch multiplies by 1.414 (41.4% more).

Step 2: Convert to Squares

Squares = Roof Area รท 100

Roofing materials are sold by the "square" โ€” 100 square feet of coverage.
