Getting an accurate material estimate starts with understanding your roof's actual surface area, which is always larger than the building footprint because of the pitch (slope).
Roof Area = Length × Width × Pitch Factor × Number of Sections
The pitch factor converts flat area to sloped area. A 4/12 pitch multiplies area by 1.054 (5.4% more). A 12/12 pitch multiplies by 1.414 (41.4% more).
Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100
Roofing materials are sold by the "square" — 100 square feet of coverage.
